UN reaches out to Universities in Indonesia
(UNIC Jakarta) - Throughout the month of October, United Nations officials will reach out to university students in Indonesia with a series of lectures and presentations about the work of the UN and its specialized agencies, funds and programmes. The initiative is part of the global UN4U (“United Nations for You”) campaign to awareness about the Organization’s work among young people, and takes places as part of the build-up to UN Day, celebrated annually on 24 October.
The UN4U campaign was initially launched in 2008 as a way to bring senior UN officials and staff at UN Headquarters in contact with students from schools in the New York City area. It has since been carried out in many countries around the world. This is the first time that the UN4U campaign is being held in Indonesia. “There’s tremendous interest in the global work of the United Nations here in Indonesia, especially at the university level,” says the Director of the UN Information Centre in Jakarta, Michele Zaccheo. “We’re delighted that so many campuses have come forward to express their interest in learning more about the UN.”
While many of the lectures and presentations will take place in campuses in the greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek), the programme also includes lectures in Denpasar, Bali, and Medan, North Sumatra. In addition, the some lectures will benefit from being transmitted live to other universities in Indonesia using the Directorate General of Higher Education’s e-learning platform INHERENT (Indonesian Higher Education Network).
UN officials participating in the UN4U campaign include the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Indonesia, Mr. El-Mostafa Benlamlih; the Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Indonesia, Ms. Coco Ushiyama; Mr. Manuel Jordao, Regional Representative of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR); Mr. Ajit Joy, Country Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC); Mr. Ignacio Leon-Garcia, Head of the UN Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA); Mr. Hubert Gijzen, Director of the UNESCO office in Jakarta; Mr. Wilson Siahaan, of the UN Millennium Campaign; and Mr. Michele Zaccheo, Director of the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Jakarta.
