CONNECT-Asia Presented Asian Internet Pioneers in MyREN Seminar

Malaysia Research and Education Network, MYREN, successfully conducted international seminar “Harnessing Technology for Global Collaboration” in 27 and 28 July 2010 in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The two days seminar brings expert speakers from international and local organization. One of the most anticipated sessions in the seminar was “Reflection and Vision of Asian Internet: Panel of Luminaries”.

This collaboration discussion brings together initiators and internet experts of Asian and European Research and Network from MyREN (Malaysia), (INHERENT) Indonesia,  (PREGINET) Philippines, canalAVIST (Thailand), SOI-Asia (Japan) and other invited speakers from LEARN (Sri Lanka) and TEIN3 (Europe). Lasted more than 4 hours, experts presented their speech remotely from their home country via video conference.

 

Dr. Sureswaran Ramadass emphasized the importance roles of MyREN as research community in scope of research and education network. Following the discussion, Dr. William Torrest addressed issue to balancing the development between ICT application and ICT infrastructure. Meanwhile Dr. Jun Murray discussed the fast innovation in information and technology and its affect to global society. Later on, Mr. Rahmat M. Samik-Ibrahim described the early internet stage in Indonesia between 1980s- 1990s. Dr. Onno W. Purbo continued the discussion by showing Indonesian’s creativity to build cheap equipments for wireless network connection. He brought along with him the equipments and explained the details.  Similar to Indonesia, Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut illustrated how Thailand internet has developed since their collaboration with University of Melbourne in 1986. From Sri Lanka, Dr. Nimal Ratnayake explained internet development in the country. Closing the discussion, Mr. David West, DANTE Project Manager, presented his paper in network evolution for research and education network.
In synch with the session, DIKTI organized a class room for staffs and students from University of Indonesia, Gunadharma University and Bina Nusantara University.  The journalists from local media were among the participants.

Other CONNECT-Asia partner, ASTI, synchronized their full day seminar with the session to promote e-learning activities and encourage more collaboration between network partners. Those activities attracted participants from research institutes, universities, government institutions and media communities.
